Home staging as a business and a career, owes a lot of its popularity to the success of shows such as Designed to Sell. First because it has put a spotlight on the home staging business. But probably more important, this show has raised the bar for home sellers everywhere. Potential home buyers expect to see homes staged as they are on television when they tour a listed property.

Admit it. When you watch other shows on HGTV (House Hunters comes to mind), don't you wonder how people can invite agents and buyers into an untidy bedroom or a cluttered living room? Yes, the bar has been raised and there's no going back.

Recently we spoke with some real estate agents and asked about the current (depressing) state of home sales. Their comments were quite telling: "For sellers, it's a beauty contest. For buyers, it's a price war." Pretty much sums up the impact that shows such as Designed to Sell have had on the psyche of home sellers. Not that it's a bad thing, it's just the way it is.
