Home Staging Courses

Good home staging courses should start by teaching you the basics of home staging. Once you know the basics, the additional knowledge and skills you will need will be easier to learn and more fun for you, too.

If, after reading this entire website, you still desire more instruction on the how-to's of home staging, we recommend pursuing a more design-driven course of study. This will supplement the knowledge we have passed on to you on this site.

The types of home staging courses we recommend to round-out your staging education include:

  • Interior Design and Decorating You will be able to find courses in interior design at most junior colleges and community colleges. Specialized colleges, such as Rhode Island School of Design, Parsons in New York, and Savannah College of Art and Design are accredited four-year colleges which offer outstanding instruction in the design field. Harrington School of Design in Chicago also provides comprehensive design courses. Interior design courses will instruct you on general knowledge topics such as space planning, how to use fabrics and textures, window treatments, and exposure to architectural principles.
  • Furniture and furniture arrangement Learning what types, styles and periods of furniture there are will help you select appropriate styles for staging all types and ages of homes. Furniture arranging is an important element of home staging and you can learn how to make rooms look more spacious with the right placement of furniture.
  • Choosing accessories and accessory arranging While accessories are kept to a minimum when homes are staged, the right accessories can make a room. The topics covered in a class on accessories will teach you about scale and placement as well as color and materials.
  • Choosing and hanging art The right art in a room can add color, texture and interest to a room with neutral furnishings. Art can convey a mood, a feeling, as well as an air of sophistication. Art can elevate a room. Learning how to select the right art, and display it properly, is a requisite skill for home staging.
  • Color forecasts and trends While staging is all about appealing to the greatest number of buyers, you still want the rooms you stage to look up-to-date. Color is an inexpensive way to bring out-of-date rooms into this century. Just as fashion colors go in and out, home decor colors have life cycles, too. Knowing how to select the right colors for your staging endeavors will help you produce visually appealing rooms that are energetic and current.
  • Rearranging and redesigning You can save your clients time and money by learning how to repurpose their existing furnishings. A course on rearranging and redesigning will teach you to think creatively about how furniture can be used in different ways and in different settings.
  • Lighting Having the right light in a room is very important for setting a mood and defining the functions of spaces. Dark homes don't sell. An in-depth knowledge of lighting theory and options will make all the other work you do in a room look better. (Did you know that Candice Olson, of TV's Divine Design, got her first design degree in lighting? Lighting is so important in her designs that you will see a lighting plan on every one of her drawings.)

There are many other home staging courses that you can take that are associated with a design degree, but these are the ones that we recommend to round out a good home staging education.
