Renting Rental Furniture

Rental furniture can be your quickest and easiest answer to solving several home staging dilemmas.

We've already discussed the situations when renting furniture is advisable (see our page on furniture rental here ). But what does renting furniture entail? How much does it cost? How do you go about it?

Whether you are renting a few pieces to complete your staging or renting an entire house full of furniture, the rental process is pretty much the same. Most cities and states have companies that rent furnishings for staging, but their primary business is renting furniture for temporary housing (such as a transferee who is renting an apartment for 4 months or someone stationed in this country for a year before returning to their native country). This is the bread-and-butter of the furniture rental business, but staging is becoming an ever-increasing portion of their revenue.

Most rental furniture companies will have a staff of people whose job it is to help you select furniture and advise you of the costs and specifics of set up and delivery. Because their primary business is to fill entire homes quickly, you will probably see that they have "packages" which include entire rooms full of furniture in different colors -- from lamps to rugs and everything inbetween. A room package can run from a few hundred dollars per month on upwards, depending on how many items are included in the package.

Similarly, the packages can vary by furniture style - traditional to contemporary - and are priced accordingly. Most of the larger furniture rental companies will have dozens of room schemes to choose from. If you are unsure about exactly what type of furniture to rent, take a room floorplan with you when you visit a rental showroom so that the salesperson can help you narrow down your options.

We have found furnishings that are in "okay" shape to "excellent" condition. Visiting a rental showroom will help you see exactly what you are getting for your rental money. We always ask to see exactly what we are going to be renting so that there are no surprises or disappointments.

Furniture rental is done on a monthly basis and the longer the term, the better rates you can negotiate.

Furniture rental companies are also a quick source for finding a few pieces to "fill in the blanks". If you need a larger dining table or a smaller sized bed, this is an economical solution instead of purchasing these items new.

We have also had great luck renting special pieces from wholesale furniture showrooms on a short-term basis. These places usually charge from 10-20% of the retail price of the furniture in rent per month. Because this is usually more expensive than a mainstream furniture rental company, we reserve this for extra special needs or very high-end homes that need furniture that is commensurate with the price point.
